About Cenote Ik Kil

Cenote Ik Kil, also known as the Sacred blue cenote, is located within an eco-arqueological park in the jungle, around 3 kilometers away from the ruins of Chichen Itzá, on the road that leads to Valladolid, and is a major tourist attraction, visited by thousands of people every day.

Surrounded by untouched jungle, Ik Kil Park is a natural habitat for dozens of amazingly colourful bird species, from toucans to parrots, turquoise motmots, cardinals, mockingbirds and many more, which are easy to spot during the visit.

Cenote Ik Kil is a perfectly round shaped well-type cenote (60 meters in diameter), resulting from the collapse of the limestone bedrock, which left the underneath groundwater exposed. The cenote was the place where the Mayan king and his courtesans used to swim and relax, although it was also used for religious purposes: human sacrifices to please the God of Rain. A staircase, carved into the limestone rock, will take you down to the water level, which is 26 meters below the ground level and 40 meters deep.

After a tour around the ruins of Chichen Itzá, the blue and fresh water will be an irresistible temptation once you’ve reached the bottom of the well: dipping in it will be the best moment of your day.

The natural setting from the bottom of the cenote Ik Kil is breathtaking: thirsty tree roots diving from the top of the vault, craving for water, little waterfalls jumping into the peaceful water surface, the sunlight exploring the darkness of this mysterious and fascinating hole in the earth.

The ideal time to visit is early in the morning, as soon as the cenote Ik Kil opens to visitors, when it is far more tranquil, and before it gets too crowded: just imagine yourself floating on your back and staring at the sky through the hole in the ceiling above you, surrounded by lush vegetation, with the only sound being one of those little waterfalls ending its' journey around your body.

Don’t you think it would be one of your life's most unforgettable experiences?
