About Puerto Morelos

Puerto Morelos is a fishing village along the sea, as well as a vacation community. Located in the northern Riviera Maya, Puerto Morelos is only about twenty minutes south from the International Airport in Cancun. It is one of the earliest communities on the Caribbean Coast of Mexico, and has a lighthouse on the coast. Today, Puerto Morelos is well known for their National Marine Park, located on a portion of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef. Snorkelers and divers can really enjoy the beauty of the sea and the friendliness of the locals.

The town of Puerto Morelos is a relaxed fishing village, only twenty minutes south of Cancun. Visitors to Puerto Morelos enjoy the slower pace of life and the much lower prices than the larger, much busier neighbors. This is the perfect town to relax, and get away from the business and distractions. You will experience the simplicity of Caribbean life, while still near enough to experience the other great sights and sounds of the Riviera Maya.

It is a small town, consisting of the town square, or Zocalo, a few small stores that sell souvenirs and supplies, a dive shop, an English bookstore, and much more. Along the waterfront, you will find restaurants such as Pelicanos, which serve up fresh seafood with a perfect view of the Caribbean. Some of the old favorites, such as The Little Mexican Cooking School and John Gray’s Kitchen are home to the foodies that visit the area during the year.

There is a beach in the middle of town that is lined with many bright and beautifully colored fishing boats- it is, after all, a fishing village. The main pier and the famous leaning lighthouse are some of the major interesting sites, offering some really great photo opportunities, and the chance to meet some nice locals. If you want to find a local guide that can take you to the reef and the Marine Park, this is where to do it. However, if you prefer a tour that is more structured, the local dive shops offer several tours throughout the day.

Puerto Morelos is beginning to expand and develop along with the all-inclusive resorts, the neighborhoods are made of some modest homes, some low-rise hotels, and some very basic cabanas. There are several different lodging opportunities, from modest palapa cabanas with thatched roofs all the way up to luxurious condo-style hotels that have extras such as meal plans, Jacuzzis, spa services, and more. There is definitely something that can satisfy every taste and budget in Puerto Morelos.
