About Rio Secreto Caves
A mystical, underworld adventure awaits at Rio Secreto. Meaning 'secret river' in Spanish, this ecological wonder is a rare opportunity for visitors to swim and hike through an exotic underground world of caves and rivers.
Rio Secreto is a natural reserve that is completely Mexican-owned and only recently discovered. The Rio Secreto cave system was found in 2007, prior to that this secret world had not been seen for thousands of years and had remained virtually untouched and perfectly preserved. A unique, semi-sunken river flows through the 12 kilometers of caves that have since been explored and mapped out and there is still a massive amount of the cave system that has yet to be examined. The owners and employees at Rio Secreto have a strong dedication to the environment and promote responsible and sustainable eco-tourism to the area. Special care is taken to preserve the land, water and resources of the Mayan Riviera.
A visit to Rio Secreto starts with a ride deep into the heart of the jungle of the Riviera Maya. A group of us decided to go to Rio Secreto for our friend's birthday. We were kind of expecting crowds of people like some of the other centoes and touristy spots but we were pleasantly surprised. They only take small groups through, we had a group of 8, and they rotate entrances so when we went underground we felt like we were the only ones around. Our guide at Rio Secreto was good, at one point we all turned our lights off and sat in silence in the dark, you literally could not see your hand in front of your face – scary, but cool. At the end we had a drink of some yummy Mayan liqueur and they fed us a pretty decent buffet for lunch. The pictures that they took of us in the cave to sell us were really expensive but we bought a set as a group and split the cost which was much more affordable. We're glad we did, the photos are a great reminder of our day and a fun birthday trip with our friend.
