Puerto Juarez, Gran Puerto and Punta Sam are the docks where the three major and most popular ferry services for accessing Isla Mujeres operate. The latest of the ferry services to Isla, Ultramar, also offers ferry services from the popular Hotel Zone, albeit at fares higher than for regular services and with less day trips.

Puerto Juarez is the most reliable of all the people ferry locations. But due to reduction in the service times there, most tourists are now being taken to Ultramar via taxis and transfers. Punta Sam, which is situated upper north, is the location for car ferry arrivals and departures. The newest of the people ferry docks is Gran Puerto.

The Punta Sam boats are rather slow and many people often take their time before reaching the dock. If wishing to take your car across to Isla Mujeres from there, it is advisable that you arrive an hour early, or earlier, to get a spot. You should also endeavor not to miss your boat because these boats only work few times daily.

Ultramar departs from Gran Puerto, which is only a couple of blocks away from the Puerto Juarez dock named after the area. Individual seats are provided on the new catamarans being operated by the service, instead of benches, making for an enjoyable ride. Tickets are bought from the desk on arrival and shown before getting on board. Roundtrip tickets are also available, but they are not really more economical than buying tickets one at a time. It is pure comfort on Ultramar boats as these are often air-conditioned. Passengers can also enjoy stunning views from the upper section. Grand Puerto dock features shops, clean bathrooms, convenience store and other great facilities.

The Magana Express Service operates from Puerto Juarez. It is the most popular ferry service for getting to Isla Mujeres. It takes around 20 minutes to get to the destination from Puerto Juarez -- sometimes quicker with a bigger boat. Tickets can be bought either at the desk or when on board if you happen to be in a rush. Boats leave for the island around every 30 minutes. Fares are also cheap.

When thinking about taking your car across to Isla, the best ferry service for you will be the car ferry service from Punta Sam. Tickets are bought before getting on board and you need to arrive early to avoid finding yourself at the back of a very long line. Car ferry usually takes approximately 45 minutes to arrive at Isla Mujeres. Fare covers both a car and driver, while an extra passenger have to pay a little amount to get on board.
