About Calakmul

Calakmul is an archeological site from Maya culture in southern Mexico. It is located in Campeche State (southern Mexico). The city was initially rediscovered in 1931 by Cyrus Lundell. It was one of the strongest and largest cities in Maya civilization. City remains give us a clear and vivid picture of life in the ancient civilization. The word calakmul means “city of two adjacent pyramids”. It was rich in bio diversity, evidences states it to be third largest in World. Calakmul site was a region of intense tropical and subtropical rich ecosystems. In the full timeline of Maya civilization, calakmul was in continuous and extensive rivalry with its nearby state, state of Tikal. It was a power game between the two states. This site is being characterized by extensive water reservoirs.
