About Mahahual

Mahahual is a vacation town located in the Costa Maya on the Caribbean Coast of Mexico. The Costa Maya is much more remote than the Riviera Maya. However, you will not regret a trip to this area. Mahahual has a charm that never ages, and was once thought only to exist in Jimmy Buffet songs and tales from the islands. You will find bungalows, shrimp cocktails, beach bars and relaxing afternoons in the shade on the beach. A visit to Mahahual will have you immediately plunged into that beach lifestyle craved by all.

Mahahual is the newest tourist town of Costa Maya on the Caribbean shores of Mexico. It is a gateway to southern Quintana Roo almost secret beaches and Mayan ruins for cruise ships. Not very long ago, Mahahual was just a few scattered beach palapas and the base for the Mexican Navy. However, curious land tourists as well as the cruise ship industry has encouraged the area to quickly develop, which makes Mahahual a desired locale to check out.

Now, Mahahual is known for its beautiful bustling beachfront with the new pedestrian walkway and malecon being highlights. The new tourist area along the beach road, while modern, has managed to maintain an air of its Caribbean, Mayan, and Mexican heritage.

Though the beaches stretch as far north as the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve and as far south as Xcalak, a coastal town, and the middle of the town is very small in comparison. However, as a rule, you will find that Costa Maya is much less expensive than the Riviera Maya, and Mahahual is the hub of this popular tourist area.

There are lots of different sites in Mahahual and the other areas in Costa Maya. The areas between Tulum and Xcalak have been called a paradise for explorers. Just past the beach, you will find unspoiled marshlands and mangrove estuaries, where you will discover lots of different species of fish. These are perfect feeding grounds for the migratory birds as they fly between the United States and South and Central America, as well as provide amazing saltwater flats fishing for anglers.

Finally, when you have gotten tired of bird watching and fishing, you will be able to access the very rarely seen Mayan ruins of Quintana Roo. Simply head out of the middle of the town, towards the interior of the peninsula. The Mayan ruins of Chacchoben are quite close to Limones, and the Mayan ruins of Kohunlich and Dzibanche are just south of this.
